It follows Lily Owens over a summer as she grows, and discovers who she is, where she belongs, and what makes her happy. From the first page, you can sense a message coming through. She learns how to deal with life and appreciate everything, throught the beauty and mysteries of bees. August and her sisters each give a special message to Lily as she grows. August acts as the Mother figure she always dreamed of, May is the free spirit she wishes she could be and June is the logical part of her that struggles a bit with enjoying life. Throughout the book, Lily takes what each sister gives to her and uses it for herself to show how she has matured and grown as a young lady. It makes the reader think about each character and what they represent in Lily's eyes, as well as think about how each sister could apply to their own lives. Overall, this book is a perfect example of sharing wisdom and ethical significance through its cryptical messages in Lily's learning and coming-of-age.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"11384943","dateCreated":"1240498854","smartDate":"Apr 23, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"djconnell","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/djconnell","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1203007020\/djconnell-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/ebersoleenglish.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/11384943"},"dateDigested":1531971882,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Technical innovation and wisdom and ethical significance","description":"To Charles A, a novel must have three important aspects of literature in order to be considered one of the necessary pieces of literature to read. Books are just one of the ways human learn morals and observe living. In the Secret Life of Bees, Kidd guides Lily to use her best judgement while dealing with the prejudices she's exposed to.
\nFrom August, she learns patience and acceptance. Lily understands to deal slowly with issues and embrace things that are different. She understands that the best way to deal with June is through calamity. For the first time in her life, Lily is exposed to Catholicism. Instead of attempting to convert the family, she embraces their differences and practices the religion.
\nArousing some scrutiny in the town, Lily lives with August, June, May, and Rosaleen, a group of black women. The wisdom and ethical significance of a literary work can be simplified to the overall messages received from the piece, reading in between the lines. So far, the lesson depicted from the book, The Secret Life of Bees has revolved around love, or more importantly, a maternal love.
